Yesterday the kids and me were riding through Westhaven, a neighborhood in Franklin to pick up our registration forms for the Race For The Cure 5k and fun run. Just as we opened our car doors, my son Roan made an interesting observation. “Daddy, the smell in the air reminds me of fall. It really smells good”.  The day was gorgeous and void of clouds, with temperatures still hovering in the mid-eighties. With only three days to go before we usher in a new season, I want to soak up the last few hours of my favorite time of the year – summer.

Often there are smells, sounds, and sights that remind us of a favorite place or memory.  I’m learning to pay particular attention to the smaller things in life and it makes me smile to see Roan doing the same. Mary Morgan always pays attention to the little things and it warms my heart every time she hugs my neck and cuddles with me on the sofa as we read or play a computer game. She often turns to me and says, “ Daddy, I’ll always remember this.”

Fall tends to be a busy season for most of us. Football and soccer games, Halloween, Thanksgiving and my goodness, Christmas will be here before you know it. My challenge to you this week is to take time to enjoy the smaller things in life that at times blows by us faster than shooting stars.

So between today’s college football games and errands, I’m going to walk down the street holding my little girl’s hand and try and beat my son in a game of one on one basketball while I still can. I bet several years from now I’ll remember each of those occasions when I encounter a particular smell or sound.
