Introducing Political Columnist and Writer Rachel Alexander

The U.S. Supreme Court heard oral arguments last week in the Hobby Lobby case to decide whether a business that provides health-care insurance to its employees can be forced to include abortifacients in its coverage. Hobby Lobby filed a lawsuit against the federal government over the Obamacare mandate of providing abortifacients.

Planned Parenthood Received $1,622 in Gov’t Funds for Each Abortion

The nation's largest abortion provider, Planned Parenthood, reports it received $542 million from government sources in 2011-2012 while performing 995,687 abortions from 2009-2011. In 2011 alone, its clinics performed 333,964 abortions. When broken down on an approximate annual basis, that means Planned Parenthood receives around $1,622 in government funds per abortion. From a time perspective, it translates to one abortion every 94 seconds. Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards, along with Board Chair Cecilia Boone addressed some of the challenges faced by the abortion giant in the past year, including the drama surrounding the Susan G. Komen Foundation's temporary withdrawal of support. "The past year will also be remembered as one when Planned Parenthood faced some of its most daunting challenges in our history – and once again emerged stronger than ever," Richards and Boone wrote in their joint statement. However, several pro-life organizations that consistently battle with Planned Parenthood were less enthusiastic about the group's perceived success, saying abortions are not a viable form of health care for women. "While government subsidies to Planned Parenthood have reached an all-time high, so too has the number of lives ended by this profit-driven abortion business," said Susan B. Anthony List President Marjorie [...]

Two Insightful Op-Ed’s from Charles Krauthammer & Penny Nance

Like most journalist, in addition to writing each day I spend an inordinate amount of time reading op-ed's and news articles. This morning I ran across two that sum up the election on different fronts. The first one is by noted Washington Post columnist Charles Krauthammer. He offers a concise look at what Obama wants to do in the areas of healthcare, education and energy in a second term. I wish every undecided voter would read it (assuming there are any undecided voters out there). You can read Krauthammer's article here. The second column is by Penny Nance who is the CEO of Concerned Women for America. Penny addresses the sensitive issue of rape and abortion. Two U.S. Senate candidates, Missouri's Todd Akin and Indiana's Richard Mourdock have found themselves in lukewarm water when they utter the words "rape" or "abortion" in front of a liberal press. And for the record, neither men are advocates of either. Here is Penny's article that was published Friday in The Christian Post.

Jesus Would Not Approve of Abortion, Says Jimmy Carter

Former President Jimmy Carter told The Christian Post that he believes Jesus would not approve of abortion with the exception of a few cases. He also criticized the Democratic Party for taking such a strong stance on supporting abortion for all women and encouraged them to soften their language in the party's platform. I never found any incompatibilities though between my religious faith and my duties as a politician except in the case of abortion," Carter told CP in an interview. " I don't believe that Jesus would approve abortion except in the case of incest, rape or the mother's life in danger." "But I had to enforce the Supreme Court ruling on Roe v. Wade so I tried to do everything I could to minimize the need for abortions, making it easy to adopt children and by caring for women and infant children in the so-called WIC program," Carter continued. "So, that was an incompatibility that I had, to maintain peace and to put my basic Christian moral values into practice, were the things that were most challenging for me." Outside of his personal belief that abortion is wrong, the former one-term president maintains that if Democrats moderate the [...]

Cain’s Abortion Misstep

Herman Cain is quickly learning that mistakes need to be rare, if not nonexistent, especially when it comes to explaining your position on key issues – and in GOP circles, abortion is a real “key” issue. Cain appeared on CNN Wednesday night and in an interview with Piers Morgan, made a statement on abortion that seemed to contradict his previous, pro-life position. “I believe that life begins at conception. And abortion – under no circumstances,” said Cain. However, Morgan proceeded to ask Cain it he would support an exception for rape and incest. “The government shouldn’t be trying to tell people everything to do, especially when it comes to a social decision that they need to make,” Cain said.
