State Bill Would Limit Shelby Co. Officeholders to 1 Role

MemphisDailyNews.com

NASHVILLE (AP) - A proposal that would allow individuals in Shelby County to hold only a single elected office is advancing in the state Legislature.

The measure sponsored by Sen. Paul Stanley, a Memphis Republican, passed the Senate 28-1. It conformed to the House version that passed last year.

The original version of that proposal would have applied to all Tennessee counties, but some lawmakers in rural counties objected because they said there's often a limited pool of residents who want to hold elected office.

It was then amended to apply to only Shelby County, where supporters say there's a problem of people holding multiple local offices.
