Fed Official Confirms Perry’s Claim of Texas Job Growth

GOP presidential candidate and Texas Governor Rick Perry has been touting the number of jobs created in Texas during the recent economic downturn. Perry has spent the past two weeks talking about the fact that about half of all the jobs in the nation have been created in Texas. Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas CEO and president Richard Fisher confirmed Perry's claims in recent remarks to a Midland, TX business group. ‘Gotcha Moments’ in Political Campaigns

Running for elected office and working in the trenches of political campaigns is not for the faint of heart. Opposition groups and individuals who oppose an elected official or candidate will sometimes do anything to discredit their opponent by catching them off-guard and using their response or actions against them. They have come to be known as “gotcha” moments and they can ruin careers. “Gotcha moments,” have been around since the beginning of time. As recorded in the New Testament, the Pharisees tried many times to pin Jesus into a corner by asking questions that, regardless of the answer, would make Him look bad. For example, should people pay taxes or should they be allowed to stone the woman caught in adultery. But it never worked – Jesus always gave the perfect answer. Unfortunately, not all politicians are so lucky.  […]

On Being a Reporter & Editor

Of all the things that I have done in my professional life - or thought I would ever do for that matter, becoming the political section editor for an on-line newspaper never crossed my mind. I liked most of the reporters I knew (with one or two exceptions, that is), even when they didn't cover stories the way I felt they should. For the past two years I've spent a lot of time writing - on learning the craft - the fundamentals and technical aspects of writing, and following the advice of great writers who say the only way to improve your writing is to write - a lot. Sometime around the end of April I received an email from a close friend saying an on-line Christian news source was looking for reporters to cover various issues such as church, family, living, business, politics, etc. Writing on politics, I thought? Could be interesting. A couple of weeks later I made contact, submitted a writing sample and went through an evaluation period before being asked to join The Christian Post (CP) as a full-time reporter covering politics. The best way to describe CP is we cover secular news from a Christian [...]

Seeking Forgiveness for our Mistakes

The past few weeks have produced many unfortunate and painful headlines for some high profile political figures. I’m thinking of Arnold Schwarzenegger, John Edwards and Anthony Weiner. Of course they are only the latest that have made news because of their sexual indiscretions. Two years ago it was me, John Ensign and Mark Sanford; so I can relate. The story of my extramarital affair, exposed by my own indiscretions and a poorly planned extortion attempt, made headlines for about 14 days, most of them “above the fold,” meaning on the top half of the front page of newspapers, on the front AOL, in People magazine and on countless websites. The other politicians I mentioned had higher profiles than me so the coverage they received was even more extensive. Believe me, it wasn’t a pleasant experience and I don’t wish it upon anyone. But sin oftentimes produces severe consequences. In reliving these headlines and even writing about them, I could not help but make a couple of relevant observations. […]

Marriage & Divorce Rates Troubling in Bible Belt States

(Below is an article I wrote for a national publication in May of 2011) Saying “I do” is easy. Committing to “for better or for worse” appears to be more difficult. Marriage in what is commonly referred to as the “Bible Belt,” the primarily southern and midwestern states known for their more conservative values is in decline and has been for the past two decades. […]
